Explaining My Chosen Viewpoints

I feel like I have different versions of myself that I show at home and at school, and that neither of these shows the full person that I am on the inside. I explored this feeling, that I have different selves, through the themes that I chose.  I chose to focus on home, school, and private selves because these are the three selves that I cycle through most days. This project helped me think more deeply about how I act at home versus alone versus school because it made me go through my day and see how differently I act during the course of the day.

Home Self

I chose the viewpoint of my home self, or my more relaxed self, because I wanted to learn more and focus more on what is happening in my brain when I am at home. In “Floating By” I focused on what I daydream about when I’m supposed to be doing homework, and on my imagination. In “glass is so fragile”, I thought about what happens when I make the things happening outside my focus, and also on the feeling of pure nothing, like when I am just staring at my reflection and the world melts away.

School Self

I chose the viewpoint of my school self to explore the different emotions I feel during the course of the school day. It hit me that I love writing, but sometimes it can be hard to get past writer's block, and that led me to “Writer’s Block”. I wrote “Alone” because I often feel like I am watching others move through life and I stay put. I also found that I am quiet in the halls but loud with friends. This helped me think deeper about different parts of my brain and how I regulate some of my emotions.

Private Self

I chose the viewpoint of my private self because I often don’t know what’s happening in my own head! I focused on this for “The parts of me, myself, and I.” I also found that I daydream a lot. Because I focused on that for “Floating By” for my home self, I didn’t explore that more for Private Self, but it was interesting that my Private and Home Selves had a lot of overlap. I also found that loud places can be overstimulating or calming based on my emotions, and that sometimes my thoughts are the loudest things around me. I reflected on this in “Be Quiet”.

I appreciated this Poetry Project. I found out a lot about my own body and mind. This helped me think more deeply about my own mind and helped me think more about my inner self. I also enjoyed being able to express these ideas through words and nonverbally, through my art.
